Worm gears are often used when large acceleration reductions are needed. The decrease ratio depends upon the number of starts of the worm and amount of teeth on the worm gear. But worm gears possess sliding contact which is calm but will produce heat and have relatively low transmission performance.
As for the materials for creation, in general, worm is made from hard metal while the worm gear is made from relatively soft steel such as aluminum bronze.
